How it works
A braces payment planner converts a single intimidating orthodontic quote into a monthly commitment your budget can actually hold — and shows what the alternative financing routes really cost. Orthodontic treatment in the US typically quotes between $3,000 and $7,500 for teens and slightly more for adult aligner therapy. Three numbers reshape that quote immediately. First, insurance: orthodontic benefits usually pay a percentage up to a lifetime cap around $1,000–$2,000, so a nominal 50% plan may cover far less than half of a $5,500 case. Second, most offices collect a start-up payment covering records, imaging and brackets. Third, the remainder almost always splits into interest-free monthly installments over the treatment's own timeline — commonly 18 to 30 months — which makes the office plan the cheapest money you will ever borrow: exactly zero percent. This calculator nets insurance off the quote, subtracts the down payment, divides the balance across your months, and prices the same balance on a card or medical loan at your APR so you can see the interest being dodged. On the default $5,550 out-of-pocket balance, the office path runs about $206 a month while a 24% APR card would add roughly $1,400 of pure interest over the same two years.Formula
Balance = quote − (insurance% × quote) − down payment | Office monthly = balance ÷ months | Financed monthly = amortised payment at APR
Tips
- Confirm your orthodontist is in-network before the consult — out-of-network claims shrink fast.
- Ask whether the down payment includes records; some offices waive it with insurance assignments.
- Use FSA or HSA dollars for the down payment — braces are a qualified expense.
- Never finance braces on a rewards card at 24%+ when the office offers free installments.
- Get two or three consultations; identical treatment plans routinely differ by $1,000 or more.
